On May 8th 1957 the application for Certificate of Organization was signed at a meeting of women at St. Jerome’s Parish in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, held with the approval of the Director on May 4th 1957, at 8 o’clock under the chairmanship of Mrs. J.J. McMahan, it was moved by Mrs. Margaret. Hutchinson, and seconded by Mrs. Blanche Wilson, that we, the undersigned women at St. Jerome’s do herby agree to form a Subdivision of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada to be known as the St. Jerome’s subdivision, to pay the National membership fee, and to apply for certificate of organization.
First Director was Rev. J. F. Buchheit, the address was Hugill Street and the first President’s name was Mr. P. M. Graham (Patricia)
Forty one people signed the original charter. (the names can be seen hanging on the wall in Room #2 meeting room at St. Jerome Parish)
In 1966 the first mass was celebrated at our current address at 26 Carmel Road.
Our membership currently is two hundred, our council meets the first Tuesday of the month from September to June, in Room #2 at 7:00 pm. We begin with an opening prayer a short meeting and usually a guest speaker, followed by a social. Member’s are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.
The Catholic Women’s League put on an annual tea “Salute to Spring” every April. We have crafts, Deli, and a bake table. Some time in November we have a Kris Kringle Craft Sale. One can find a lot of good Christmas gift ideas at this sale. The monies raised go to our annual commitments to the parish, mission assistance, youth and the community.
Every Wednesday at 1-3:30pm we meet to do crafts, knitting, crocheting , embroidering, or just conversation, over a cup of coffee or tea.
We volunteer at the Davey Home Tuck Shop two weeks a year.
Visit Pathway Retirement Home-monthly.
Work the Blood Donor Clinic-serving coffee.
Supply baking for funeral luncheons, and church functions.
Assisting parish secretary on occasions, inserting and folding church bulletins.
Serving at Funeral Luncheons.
Help in various ministries within the church, from the environment committee, ministers of the Eucharist. R.C.I.A. and many more.
